JOINT COMMUNICATION ON MOU SIGNING BETWEEN CHURCH OF UGANDA AND UNOC
31st October 2023: Church of Uganda and Uganda National Oil Company are cognizant of the fact that addressing the climate change crisis will require sustained collaborative efforts, national solidarity, and ambitious commitments.

In that regard, the two entities are committed to jointly undertake interventions to address the prevailing climate change challenges. The interventions will be coordinated through the recently launched Alliance for Climate Resilience (ACR).

It is for this reason that on this 31st day of October 2023, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed between the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) and The Registered Trustees of the Church of Uganda (COU). This commitment is intended to foster a structured cooperation among the two entities in advancing the ACR goals.

UNOC and COU commit to collaborating on various initiatives under the Alliance, which will safeguard our planet and ensure the well-being of current and future generations.

The areas of collaboration under this MOU include;
a) Conservation of already existing natural resources as identified by all CoU Dioceses.
b) Reforestation and afforestation of selected areas identified by all COU Dioceses.
c) Mobilization of financial resources and expertise to support the implementation of conservation, reforestation, and afforestation management plans.
d) Support local communities to establish and manage selected climate mitigation and adaptation initiatives at household level.
e) Promotion of the use of alternative clean cooking and lighting energy sources at household level.
f) Enhancement of Uganda’s regional and international presence in the promotion of climate change adaptation and mitigation initiatives.
g) Engagement of Church of Uganda Institutions, including schools and churches, in conservation, reforestation, and afforestation programs.
Through this strategic partnership, the Alliance will enhance carbon emissions uptake through conservation of forests and wetlands, mobilize climate financing, support local communities in adapting to climate-related risks, and raise grassroots-level awareness about climate change.
By coming together, we acknowledge that no single entity can comprehensively address climate change challenges alone, yet by pooling expertise, resources, and innovative ideas, we shall forge a path towards a more climate resilient Uganda.
Signed on this 31st day of October 2023, at the Provincial Secretariat of the Province of the Church of Uganda.
